The Science Literacy Research Group of the Preparatory Committee of the World Organization for Science Literacy held an online meeting on May 19th, 2022 to discuss how to revise and improve the international questionnaire on civil science literacy and listen to the opinions of experts from different countries about the quality and applicability of tools for civil science literacy assessment. More than 20 experts from 12 countries: China, Israel, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ukraine, Tanzania, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Australia participated in the meeting, which was co-chaired by Wang Jingchun, research fellow, executive secretary of the Preparatory Committee of the World Organization for Science Literacy and deputy director of China Research Institute for Science Popularization, and Ehud Menipaz, chairman of Board of Governors of Association of Engineers, Architects and Graduates in Technological Sciences in Israel.
In 2021, the Preparatory Committee of the World Organization for Science Literacy conduct an international project to study and assess civil science literacy. The initial result "Assessment Index Framework of Civil Science Literacy" was announced in the same year. The international questionnaire on civil science literacy for discussion during the meeting was developed based on the "Assessment Index Framework of Civil Science Literacy", to provide the different countries and regions with efficient tools for civil science literacy assessment.
As the head of project partners, Prof. Wang Jian from Beijing Normal University addressed the meeting on the background, process, and preliminary survey results about the development of tools for international civil science literacy assessment. The project team has developed two sets of assessment tools in combination with tools, which are commonly used worldwide for civil science literacy assessment, and the latest research results on assessment. Experts at the meeting intensively discussed topics about assessment tools, such as the accuracy of text expression, scientific nature of subjects, and inapplicability in different countries and regions. They also made constructive suggestions for improvement.
In addition, experts conducted an on-site discussion about technical issues related to follow-up assessment, such as languages and translation of assessment tools, the selection of assessment forms (face-to-face interviews or online surveys) and assessment objects, and financial support.
According to reports, the Secretariat of the Preparatory Committee of the World Organization for Science Literacy will use this questionnaire in a pilot assessment of civil science literacy, which will be conducted in 2~4 countries between September and December, to support the final revision and improvement of the survey tools..
