After months of competition, winners of the 2nd "Promoting Public Science Literacy" International Contest of Creative Popular Science Videos have recently been revealed, with 50 works receiving the first, second, and third prizes. The contest was guided by the China Research Institute for Science Popularization, hosted by the Secretariat of the World Organization for Science Literacy (Preparatory), and co-hosted by Zhihu. It had received over 10,000 submissions from 19 countries and regions, including China, the US, Australia, and Sir Lanka.
The contest's organizing committee invited experts from several countries to conduct multi-round reviews on the submitted works' content, scientific accuracy, production quality, the effectiveness of communication, etc. The final winners hailed from 13 countries, including China, the US, Sir Lanka, Belgium, and Argentina.
The award-winning works featured various scientific topics, including aerospace, physics, chemistry, artificial intelligence, environmental science, and medicine. The award recipients also came from a diverse age group, with some winners being middle school students. These creators utilized their professional knowledge and created masterpieces with varied and refreshing styles.
The submission process received strong support from the Secretariat of the World Organization for Science Literacy (Preparatory). The event is a key exchange platform for the WOSL (Preparatory) with the important goals of guiding and encouraging science communicators worldwide to engage in science popularization and promote public science literacy with science education videos. The contest will aggregate, share and disseminate these quality works to improve global public science literacy.
To help participants better understand and create science popularization videos, the event's host launched multiple online courses and published a handbook in Chinese and English to guide the creative process. The handbook featured sections on topic selection, script writing, cinematography, editing, and others, allowing newcomers to become effective science communicators. These education resources are accessible at any time on the official website of the WOSL (Preparatory).
The winning works at all levels are listed in no particular order.
