Zhang Yuxian, male, Han nationality, born in Tongjiang County in Sichuan, 44 years old, member of Communist Party of China, with a Master degree from Tsinghua University and a PhD degree from Peking University, Senior Veterinarian, Deputy Director of the Live Pig Professional Committee of CRSTA, President of Bashan Local Pig Breeding Association, Bazhong Municipal CPPCC Member, as well as Scientific Special Commissioner of Bazhong City. In 2010, he was employed as a visiting professor by Sichuan Agricultural University. In 2017, he was employed by Department of Higher Education under Ministry of Education as a counselor to help Chinese college students to launch mass entrepreneurship and innovation. Now, he serves as chairman and general manager of Bashan Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. in Bazhong City. He was nominated as “Top 10 Innovative and Reform Characters in Sichuan”, was awarded with the first prize of the Rural Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Sichuan Province, and won honorary titles such as the “Top 10 Advanced Individual in Poverty Alleviation” in Bazhong City.

Staying True to His Original Aspiration and Quitting a Good Money Job to Return to His Home Village and Become a “Swineherd”
Zhang Yuxian was eager to learn from childhood and had an excellent academic performance. But because of his poor family, he relied on the help of his neighbors, relatives and friends to complete his studies. At the age of 19, the death of his parents became a bitter blow to him and inspired him to be fired up and survive in adversity.
In 2009, it was incredible that Zhang Yuxian resolutely quitted his job as a senior executive with an annual salary of 3 million yuan in a foreign company and returned to his remote hometown Tongjiang from Guangdong Province to become a “swineherd”.
“When I went into business, I wanted to find a way at the frontier of reform and opening-up to promote the development of my hometown. Now, it’s time to go back for development.”
It was not easy to start a business. After two years of searching for the best pure Qingyu Pig breed, he traveled more than 10,000 kilometers throughout more than 3,000 villages in Chongqing, Shaanxi and Sichuan. When his hard work paid off, he finally obtained Qingyu Pig, a kind of national excellent local pig breed with a history of thousands of years and on the verge of extinction.
He established the Bashan Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the Bashan Animal Husbandry). On this basis, he founded the Bashan Local Pig Breeding Association to focus on developing the whole industry chain project integrating Qingyu Pig breed conservation, reproduction, breeding, slaughtering, processing, cold chain, logistics and marketing.
“Tongjiang County is underdeveloped in industry, but it has a good ecological environment and is a pure land without pollution. We should make good use of these advantages to create high-valued and high-quality ecological pork”, which is the position Zhang Yuxian defined for the product. In 2014, the Bashan Animal Husbandry obtained the EU ECOCERT certification as the only Chinese pig enterprise and the certification of Protected Geographic Indication Product in China. At the invitation of Ministry of Commerce, Zhang Yuxian accompanied Premier Li Keqiang to attend the ASEM Summit and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Chinese Pork Is Safe”.
In 2015, Qingyu Pig was awarded with the “Golden Pig Award for Animal Welfare” by the Compassion In World Farming (CIWF), and thus became one of the “four famous pigs” in the world. The marketing of more than 100 products (e.g., “Bashan Local Pig”, “Qingyu Black Suckling Pig” and “Qingyu Black Pig” series frozen pork, chilled fresh pork and intensive processing products such as pork luncheon meat and preserved meat) have been launched through the cooperation with the Fortune Global 500 firms such as Carrefour, Ito Yokado, Alibaba, JD.COM, Air China, etc. The company has successively won many honors such as the key leading enterprise of agricultural industrialization in Sichuan Province, the key conservation farm of fine local pig breed in Sichuan Province, the standardized breeding demonstration farm in Sichuan Province and the demonstration enterprise of agricultural product processing in Sichuan Province.
Caring Deeply about His Native Place and Helping Fellow Villagers with the Innovative Poverty-Relief Mode
Tongjiang County is the poverty-stricken county assisted by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) for fixed-point poverty alleviation. Zhang Yuxian came up with the idea to find the best combined point among bank, enterprise and farmers for targeted poverty alleviation. Through repeated practices and demonstrations, he has finally explored a new mode to realize industry-oriented poverty alleviation through “five-party linkage” of “government + enterprise + bank + insurance + poverty-stricken households”; i.e., governmental planning, piglets distributed by the enterprise, funds from the bank, risk-taking insurance and net profits gained by farmers.
According to the standard of five piglets with a value of 500 yuan per head for an impoverished person, ICBC should invest funds to buy piglets for poverty-stricken households, and Bashan Animal Husbandry should provide pig feed, technology and epidemic prevention and collect the pigs after six months of breeding. As for the poverty-stricken households without breeding conditions and capacity, the mode of centralized custom rearing should be adopted by relying on big pig farmers. When the pigs are ready for slaughter, Bashan Animal Husbandry should provide the poverty-stricken households with an equal quantity of piglets for free, thus realizing the rolling development.
On the basis of the “five-party linkage” mode with ICBC, Bashan Animal Husbandry has also taken the initiative to deepen the cooperation with other financial institutions (e.g., Credit Cooperatives, PICC P&C, Postal Savings Bank of China, etc.) and social forces (e.g., the Pillar Project of Sichuan Province Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, Carrefour, etc.) so as to constantly improve the scale and quantity of “five-party linkage” poverty alleviation through industrial development. Accumulatively, a total of more than 10,000 people in over 4,000 households have been encouraged to raise Qingyu pigs for the company; and more than 1,600 poverty-stricken households and over 6,000 impoverished people have been lifted out of poverty and become rich. In order to expand the distribution channels and make Qingyu pork being placed on the dining-tables of Beijing and Shanghai citizens within 24 hours, Zhang Yuxian has sold it throughout the country via the e-commerce platform of www.51ganjie.cn.
In addition, Bashan Animal Husbandry has transferred more than 7,000 mu of desolated land is in villages and towns such as Tiefo, Guangna and Hongkou to build national-level original breed farms, reproduction farms, pastures and green pig farms, and a land transfer fee of over 1.6 million yuan should be paid annually. Annually, the income of poverty-stricken families can be increased by about 2,000 yuan, and the surrounding farmers can also receive an additional gain of over 1,000 yuan through the sales of feed. Annually, Bashan Animal Husbandry purchases more than 70 thousand Jin of corns, rice and wheat from the farmers, and thus the farmers can realize a maximum additional gain of more than 20,000 yuan annually.
According to the company’s plan, the enterprise will be able to provide 150,000 fattening pigs by 2020 through the “five-party linkage” mode for industry-oriented poverty alleviation, and thus directly and indirectly drive more than 30,000 impoverished people of over 10,000 families in 100 villages out of poverty and increase their income.

Showing Great Love and Paying Back Society with Gratitude
Bashan Animal Husbandry adopts the mode of combining intellectual support with technical assistance and prioritizes the employment of vocational school and college graduates from impoverished families. Currently, among 216 employees of the company, there are 87 employees from impoverished families. In addition, the per capita income of them exceeded 40,000 yuan in 2017.
Zhang Yuxian cooperated with ICBC again to establish the “Charity Rescue Fund” of Bashan Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. and carry out a charity sale & donation activity of Qingyu Pig with the help of the ICBC’s e-mall platform. 500 yuan per Qingyu Pig and 3% of the company’s annual transaction value should be deposited in the Charity Rescue Fund, which will be mainly used for the rescue of severely disabled and seriously ill children. Over 1 million yuan has been donated accumulatively.
In July 2014, Zhang Yuxian and his classmates also made a cash donation of 500,000 yuan to Tongjiang County for excellent teachers in remote mountainous areas of Tongjiang. In recent years, he has supported more than 60 impoverished families and more than 50 impoverished students, including Jing Xiangjun, “the most beautiful forest ranger”.
Under his leadership, all Party members of the company’s Party branch took the initiative to assist 21 impoverished households in Jintang Village, Guanna Town, Tongjiang County, in 2015 to steadily lift themselves out of poverty. In 2016, Bashan Animal Husbandry was rated as the “Top 10 Philanthropic Enterprises in Bazhong City”.
