“The branches of these big trees are too dense, and the branches that block the light ought to be cut off; the newly planted small trees should be properly managed, and the buds below 50 cm should be erased, otherwise it will affect the formation of walnuts and the growth of small trees...” Guo Suping, a researcher at the Forestry College of Hebei Agricultural University, was surrounded by fruit growers at a walnut garden of 100 mu in Donggutou Village, Hengshui. The farmers seemed to take it seriously. Everyone has said that Professor Guo’s explanation was comprehensive, meticulous and easy to understand; and they were full of confidence in this year’s harvest.

For Guo Suping, who has been in her 60s, such a scene has never been interrupted for decades. It is always the biggest wish of her life to stick to the most lovable villagers as well as the promotion of agriculture technology and to let the villagers get rid of poverty and become rich.
As early as the 1980s, Guo Suping and her husband Li Baoguo left the university and took root in the countryside to conduct scientific research. For more than 30 years, they have traveled to mountain villages, large and small, in the Taihang Mountains, bringing advanced fruit culture and other technologies to the farmers. They have endured great hardships and taken on painstaking job.

The once bare hills and untamed waters have now become the greenest places in the Taihang Mountains. And poor villages and villagers gradually got rid of poverty and became rich. Professor Li Baoguo was also known as “the new Yugong on the Taihang Mountains.” Unfortunately, in 2016, Li Baoguo died of illness.
With the gentleness and meticulousness peculiar to women, Guo Suping continues to popularize science and technology all over the place in this region, practicing the spirit of a new “Yugong” on the Taihang Mountains. She once said: “Our team is still there though Baoguo has gone, and we will continue to dedicate to the cause he has not completed.”

Guo Suping seems to be busier; she travelled to Zhangjiazhuang, Gangdi, Lvling, Luan County, Luanping, Lingshou, Xuzhou, Ruoqiang, and Luntai. She insisted on applying technology to restore bare hills to the original condition and bring wealth to the folk. More than 90% of her time in the year was spent in running about all over the place where the folk need it. “Give my mobile phone number to the folk” has become Guo Suping’s pet phrase.
She is quite articulate, which comes from years of painstaking job on the farm explaining agriculture technology to farmers. Guo Suping said that farmers need agriculture technology that can be understood and listened to by everyone so that they will learn and use it with confidence. This requires that the promoter must understand agriculture, and also be articulate.

As a forestry expert, Guo Suping always attaches great importance to the role of agricultural science and technology in increasing income. She has hosted (participated in) 18 national and provincial scientific research projects. In the meantime, she is particularly concerned about translating technological power into real productivity. In her view, the key to increasing farmers’ income is to find suitable agricultural industries and to popularize and apply new technologies.
Someone once said to her, “You are so lucky. Every time you go to a place, there is a change in this place, and villagers there can even get rid of poverty and become rich.” She smiled and responded: “It’s not just luck, I run about all over the place. Farmers like me, and we become attached to each other, so that it is only natural for me to bring them out of poverty and get rich.”

Some people even asked Guo Suping, “What are you doing these things for?” Guo Suping still smiled and said: “I am truly blessed to see the saplings planted by me slowly grow up, to see the bare hills covered with green clothes, and to see the poor farmers become happy. As for me, there is nothing better than this.”
