Thematic Forum "Service and Development of Science Centers under the New Situation" of 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy Held in Beijing

On December 7th, the thematic forum "Service and Development of Science Centers under the New Situation" of 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy was held in Beijing. The forum was sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology, organized by Beijing Development Center of Popular Science, Beijing Association for Science Education Museums and Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals, and co-organized by Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Science Education Museums Alliance, Yangtze Delta Alliance for Popularization of Science and Science Museum Alliance of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Liu Xiaokan, Vice Chairman of BAST, addressed the forum. The meeting was chaired by Su Guomin, Director of Beijing Development Center of Popular Science, BAST.
In his speech, Liu Xiaokan, Vice Chairman of BAST, said that "those share the same aspirations will not be separated even by mountains and seas". Although the sudden public health crisis has made it impossible for us to meet in person for the time being, it cannot stop our exchange and mutual learning, our determination to fight side by side, and our confidence to work together for win-win results. He called upon all science and technology venues to take the forum as an opportunity to share solutions and plans to deal with the public health crisis, strengthen strategic communication and coordination, steadily promote cooperation in various fields, and jointly promote the continuous improvement of the science literacy of the global public.
In the keynote speech session, the speakers shared the solutions and plans for just-in-time science popularization of science centers in different countries from various perspectives and discussed the direction and approach of future development under the new situation. The speakers include Pang Xiaodong, Vice president of China Science and Technology Museum, He Suxing, Director of Beijing Science Center, Wang Xiaoming, President of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Lu Jingui, Director of Guangdong Science Center, Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore, Ganigar Chen, Vice president of National Science Museum, Thailand, Prieto Ines, Director of International Affairs of Cité de l’Espace, Happy Jabulani Nukeri, Managing Director of SAASTA, Helen Jones, Director of Global Engagement and Strategy, Science Museum Group, UK, Andreas Waschk, CEO of Science Centre Odysseum, Germany, and Zeng Fulin, Director of Department for International Affairs of BAST.
The forum has provided important insights for the service and development of science centers in the new era, and has contributed to global partnerships through deepening practical cooperation, so that the science communication community may achieve coordinated development and work together to overcome all risks and challenges facing mankind .
The forum features both online and offline sessions, with sub-venues set up in more than 20 countries and regions aside from the main offline venue. It was also broadcast live to the world through network platforms, with a total of more than 50,000 participants.
The World Conference on Science Literacy is sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology. It is committed to building a global, comprehensive and high-level exchange and cooperation platform in the field of science communication, promoting the improvement of global science literacy and better addressing global common issues of technological and social development. From November 18th to December 7th, the five thematic forums of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy kicked off successively, focusing on improving public science literacy in different fields. On December 8th, the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy was held in Beijing.
