Thematic Forum of “Science Education for Children & Youth towards 2035” at the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy is Held in Beijing

On November 27, 2020, Thematic Forum of “Science Education for Children & Youth towards 2035” at the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology and co-organized by the Children & Youth Science Center of China Association for Science and Technology, Beijing Normal University and East China Normal University, was held in Beijing Normal University.
This forum conducted in-depth discussions on core topics including “International Policy and Concepts of Science & Technology Education for Children & Youth”,“Innovation and Upgrade of Education Practice for Young Science & Technology Talents”, “Building Education Eco-System in Cultivating Young Science & Technology Talents”. The conference invited Mr. Dong Qi, president of Beijing Normal University, Ms. Xin Bing, director of the Children & Youth Science Center of China Association for Science and Technology, to deliver opening speeches, and invited Professor David Anderson of University of British Columbia, Associate Professor Yew Jin Lee of Nanyang Technological University, Professor Zhu Junwen of East China Normal University, Distinguished Professor Joseph A. Gardella, Jr. of University of Buffalo, the State University of New York, Professor Adam Maltese of Indiana University, Professor Hu Weiping of Shaanxi Normal University, Mr. Li Yuliang, director of the Hi-tech Zone Branch of Weifang Education Bureau, and other science and technology education experts to attend the conference and deliver keynote reports. The conference was chaired by Professor Zheng Yonghe, dean of the Faculty of Science Education of Beijing Normal University.

The experts at the conference discussed and shared their views on various topics including the formulation and development of international children & youth science and technology education policies, strategies and paths of regional children & youth science and technology talent training, the promotion of children & youth science and technology talent training model transformation through interdisciplinary cooperation, the supporting role of scientific research institutions in children & youth science and technology education, the professional development of teachers engaged in science and technology education, the cultivation of children & youth’s innovation ability, and the reform of science courses teaching.
The forum was held online and offline with live broadcast. About 100 people engaged in the field of science education, including policy makers, researchers, university teachers, primary and middle school teachers, and graduate students, attended the on-site conference. As of the end of the forum, the online live broadcast has attracted one million viewers.

Facing the opportunities and challenges of the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation in the age of intelligence, the fundamental, leading, and overall role of science education in cultivating innovative talents and realizing sustainable economic and social development has received great attention from all over the world and urged various countries to actively explore new methods and paths to improve the effectiveness of science education. As an important part of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy, this forum aims to play a positive role in promoting the overall reform of science education system and provide theoretical guidance and practical experience for the transformation of science education goals, teaching content, education methods, teaching evaluation, etc., thus helping to achieve the goals and vision of “China’s Education Modernization 2035,” and build a wider stage for international cooperation in the field of science education.
It is reported that the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy, held from November 18 to December 7, set up five thematic forums, covering the topics of “Science Education for Children & Youth towards 2035,” “A Healthy World, A Better Future,” “Services and Development of Science Center under the New Situation,” “Public Science Literacy and Ecological Civilization Construction,” and “Public Science Literacy and Public Health Crisis Response.” On December 8, the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy will be held in Beijing.
