Ciência Viva is the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, created in 1996 to promote public awareness of the importance of science and technology at a national level, with a particular emphasis on young people. The Agency promotes and supports science education projects at school, placements for secondary school students in research laboratories during the holidays and summer science activities for the general public. Since its creation, Ciência Viva has been developing activities along three different and complementary streams: science education (schools), public awareness of science (citizens) and a national network of 20 interactive policy centres, in collaboration with universities and local authorities. Regarding decision makers, The Pavilion of Knowledge, in Lisbon – the headquarters of Ciência Viva –, is the largest science centre in Portugal. It has participated in more than 30 European projects since 2002, dedicated to science awareness, science education, virtual/digital share of scientific resources and recently responsible research innovation. Regarding space education, Ciência Viva signed a contract programme with the European Space Agency to host the ESERO- Portugal, part of the network of European Space Education Resource Office. Ciência Viva is also a member and sits on the board of the ASTC – Association of Science – Technology Centres, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the European Science Events Association (EUSEA). |
